Common questions

If I rename a tag, do my flows still work?

Yes. A rename rewrites the tag everywhere it is named, automations and their saved versions included, in one step, or changes nothing at all.

Can I delete a tag a flow uses?

No. A tag still in use cannot be deleted; the dialog lists what uses it so you can take it out first.

Where can tags be used?

In a flow's Tag step and Condition, in People's filters and segments, and in the inbox's labels and contact panel. It is the same tag everywhere.

Guide: Create and rename tags

This page: https://commentwatchdog.com/help/people/create-and-rename-tags

Topic: People

Time: about 2 minutes

Who can do it: Owner, Administrator or Manager

Author: https://anantgupta.xyz (Anant Gupta, founder of CommentWatchDog)

Start in the app: https://app.commentwatchdog.com/en/inbox/people

Result when done: Tags you can use in any flow, filter and inbox label, renamed everywhere at once.

Context: Tags mark people: lead, tasting, ambassador. A flow's Tag step adds or removes them, a teammate adds them on a contact or in the inbox, and a Condition, a filter or an inbox label can read them. The Tags view shows every tag on your account, how many people carry it, what puts it on and when it was last used. Renaming a tag rewrites it everywhere it is named (contacts, automations and their saved versions, segments, inbox labels) in one go, or not at all.

Before you start

1. Renaming into a name that already exists merges the two tags.

2. A tag still in use cannot be deleted; the dialog lists what uses it.

3. A link start can tag people with where they came from.

Steps

Step 1 of 3: Open the Tags view.

Where: People, then Tags in the switch at the top (Contacts, Tags, Fields).

Screenshot: https://commentwatchdog.com/media/shots/dm-people-tags-plain-phone.en.webp (Tags on a phone.)

You should see: Tag, People, Set by and Last used for every tag. Set by names the automations that put the tag on, or By hand. A phone shows Tag and People.

Step 2 of 3: Create a tag.

Where: New tag, at the top of the Tags view. Type its Name (for example VIP), then Create tag.

Screenshot: https://commentwatchdog.com/media/shots/dm-people-tags-plain-phone.en.webp (New tag, above the table on a phone.)

Screenshot: https://commentwatchdog.com/media/shots/dm-people-tag-new.en.webp (The name, then Create tag.)

Screenshot: https://commentwatchdog.com/media/shots/dm-people-tag-new-phone.en.webp (The same on a phone.)

You should see: A toast confirms the new tag. Put it on people from a contact, the Actions menu or a flow's Tag step.

Step 3 of 3: Rename or delete a tag.

Where: The ⋯ button at the end of a tag's row opens its actions: See people (everyone who carries it), Rename and Delete. Rename asks for the new name; a name that already exists merges the two tags.

Screenshot: https://commentwatchdog.com/media/shots/dm-people-tags-phone.en.webp (The same on a phone.)

You should see: Renamed “old” to “new”, with the places renamed in the same step listed.

If something is off

Problem: Nothing was renamed

Fix: Something still names the tag in a way the rename cannot reach. The dialog lists it; change it there first.

Problem: The tag is still used here

Fix: A tag in use cannot be deleted. Take it out of the automations, segments or inbox labels listed, then delete it.

Problem: Two tags became one

Fix: You renamed one into a name that already existed, so they merged: everyone carrying the old one now carries the other.
