Delete, hide, or off

Three ways to make a comment disappear, and what each keeps

Delete removes the comment for everyone and cannot be undone. Hide keeps it for the author and their friends. Turning comments off hides all of them until you turn them back on. Instagram lets you select several comments on your own post; Facebook deletes one at a time. Read: how to delete spam comments on Facebook ads, one and in bulk.

What we found

Deleting by hand is three taps. Nobody does three thousand.

Meta deletes scam ads by the hundred million and says so. Comments under your posts have no bulk tool on Facebook and a capped one on your own Instagram posts. Here is what a backlog costs at three taps a comment.

Delete or hide? Hide for negativity you may answer; delete for spam, scams and abuse. What hiding does on Facebook.

How it works

No code, no passwords shared.

2

Choose what gets deleted

Spam, scams, abuse. Delete on sight; hide the rest.

Questions

Questions people ask

Short answers, from the platforms' own pages where the answer is theirs.

Yes, on your own posts, Page posts and ads, on both platforms. Elsewhere you can only hide it from yourself or report it.

Neither platform sends a notification. The comment simply disappears for them too.

Facebook has no bulk delete; turning comments off hides them all. Post cleanup deletes them in bulk after you filter: paste the post link, select all, delete.

On your own post, open the comments, choose Manage comments, select the ones to remove, Delete. Instagram limits how many you can select at once. Post cleanup has no such limit and works on ads.

It is on someone else's post, or your Page role has task access only. Owners and people with Facebook access to the Page can delete.

Hide for negativity you do not want amplified and may reply to; delete for spam, scams, abuse and anything that breaks your policy. Deleted cannot be undone.
