Hidden, deleted, or off

What each one does, in Facebook's own words

Hidden: visible to the author and their friends, gone for everyone else, replies hidden with it. Deleted: gone for everyone. Comments off: every comment on the post hidden until you turn them on again. Facebook's own automation, Moderation Assist, hides by link, image, keyword and a few account signals, only for comments made after you set it up. Read: how to hide comments on Facebook ads and who can see a hidden comment.

What we found

The comments that hurt rarely contain a word you would list

Meta says it in its own report: harassment is personal, and detecting it by machine is harder than detecting spam. A blocked-words list has the same problem. These were hidden on Pages without matching a single listed word.

One click. Three different views.

You hide a comment on your Page. You still see it, greyed, with an Unhide. The author and their friends see it exactly as before, and get no notification. Everyone else sees the next comment move up.

Questions

Questions people ask

Short answers, from Facebook's own pages where the answer is Facebook's.

The person who wrote it and their friends. Everyone else no longer sees it, and its replies are hidden with it. That is Facebook's own rule for Page comments.

Facebook does not notify them, and because they and their friends still see it, most never notice.

It disappears for everyone except the author and their friends. You can find it later under the comment sort menu, Hidden by this Page, and unhide it, block the profile or report it.

Facebook offers the profanity filter and blocked words on your Page, and Moderation Assist for creators, which hides by link, image, keyword and a few account signals, only for comments made after you set it. CommentWatchDog adds rules that read meaning, negativity, scams, off-topic, hides or deletes, and clears the backlog.

Hide when you want the comment out of view without a confrontation. Delete when it is spam, a scam or abuse. Both are one click, per comment or by rule.

Facebook lets you limit who can comment on a post or turn comments off, which hides every comment until you turn them back on. A rule that hides everything is possible in CommentWatchDog but usually the wrong tool: hide what hurts and keep the rest.
