The Public reply step answers under the comment on Instagram or Facebook with one of up to five variations picked at random, starting with @their name. Paired with a private reply, as in comment to DM, it tells everyone else to check their DMs.

How it runs

In public, in their name

A different variation for each comment, posted as your page, with a mention.

  1. 01

    Under their comment

The reply posts under the comment that started the flow, as your page, where everyone reading sees it.

  2. 02

    A different one each time

Up to five variations, one picked at random for each comment, so a busy post never shows the same reply fifty times.

CommentWatchDog: 5 variations, 500 characters each

  3. 03

    They are mentioned

“Mention them” is on by default: on Instagram the reply starts with @their username, so they are notified.

  4. 04

    Then the private reply

A public reply goes alongside the one private reply Meta allows per comment, before or after it.

Meta’s rules it follows

Comment starts only

A public reply needs a comment to reply to, so it appears in flows that start on a comment, on posts, reels and ads.

Replies to replies

On Instagram a reply to a reply lands under the top-level comment: Instagram threads only one level deep.

Meta: Instagram replies to top-level comments

Not under a hidden comment

Instagram refuses replies to hidden comments, so a flow that hides the comment and then replies in public is refused when you save it.

Meta: you cannot reply to hidden comments on Instagram

Alongside the private reply

It does not use up the one private reply Meta allows per comment: both can go.

Where it fits

On every comment start

Public replies go where comments start a flow: posts, reels and ads.

The comment gets a public reply where everyone sees it, then the private reply lands in their DMs.
