Common questions

What does a pasted cURL command fill in?

The method, the address, the headers, the authentication and the body, from the command as written in the docs.

Is the API key in a cURL command stored safely?

Yes. A key in the command is made secret automatically and saved encrypted; nobody sees it again, not even in the run history.

Guide: Paste a cURL command

This page: https://commentwatchdog.com/help/http-requests/paste-a-curl-command

Topic: HTTP requests

Time: about 3 minutes

Who can do it: Owner, Administrator or Manager

Author: https://anantgupta.xyz (Anant Gupta, founder of CommentWatchDog)

Start in the app: https://app.commentwatchdog.com/en/inbox

Result when done: The request filled in from a cURL command copied from any API's docs, ready to test.

Context: Most API docs show an example as a cURL command. Paste it into the HTTP request step and the method, address, headers, auth and body fill in by themselves. A key in the command (a header named like a key, an access_key in the address, a long token) is made secret automatically.

Before you start

1. Copy the whole command from the docs, from curl to the last line.

2. Anything the builder cannot use is listed, never silently dropped.

3. Check the fields and swap the docs' sample values for variables afterwards.

Steps

Step 1 of 4: Open Paste a cURL command.

Where: In the HTTP request step's settings, Paste a cURL command, at the top, above Address.

Screenshot: https://commentwatchdog.com/media/shots/dm-http-curl-phone.en.webp (The same on a phone.)

You should see: A box opens: Copy the example from your API's docs and paste it here. The method, address, headers, auth and body fill in by themselves.

Step 2 of 4: Paste the command and press Build it.

Where: Paste into the box. A command that reads right builds at once; otherwise press Build it (or Ctrl or ⌘ + Enter). Cancel closes the box and changes nothing.

You should see: Built from your cURL. Check the fields below. Anything left out is named in the same line.

Step 3 of 4: Check the fields.

Where: Address (with its method), Authentication, Body, Query parameters and Headers are filled in from the command. Replace the docs' sample values with variables where they should change per person, using the {x} button. A key from the command reads Saved and hidden.

Screenshot: https://commentwatchdog.com/media/shots/dm-http-curl-built-phone.en.webp (The same on a phone.)

You should see: The step on the canvas shows the method and the address.

Step 4 of 4: Send a test request.

Where: In the Response section, under Headers: fill a sample value for each variable, then Send test request (Test again once a test has run).

You should see: The status, the time it took and Takes the Success way, then Fields it sent back.

If something is off

Problem: That doesn't read as a cURL command with an address

Fix: Copy the command again from the start (curl …) including the address.

Problem: A part was left out

Fix: The line after Build it names what was left out. Add it by hand in its section of the form.

Problem: A key shows as Saved and hidden

Fix: Keys in the command are made secret on purpose. Replace puts in a new one.

Common questions
