Guide: Turn off comments on Facebook ads

Context: For most advertisers there is no switch. Meta's help page says anyone who can see your ad can comment on it, and the comment control Meta announced in October 2024 is still a test available to a limited number of businesses. The switch that always exists belongs to a Page post, so it covers a boosted post and not an ad built in Ads Manager. A rule keeps comments on and the junk off, and Hide all comments is the off switch that keeps the questions.

Before you start:
1. Meta's words: for most advertisers, anyone who can see your Facebook, Instagram or Threads ad can react to it or comment on it. Comment controls are a test available to a limited number of businesses.
2. The one switch that always exists belongs to a Page post, so it covers a boosted post and not an ad built in Ads Manager.
3. A rule keeps comments on and the junk off; Hide all comments is the off switch that keeps the questions.

Steps:
Step 1 of 4: Look for Comment controls in your own ad account.
Where: In Ads Manager, open the ad set, then Placements, then Inventory filter. Accounts in Meta's test see Comment controls there with two choices, Public and No one. Meta has kept the control a limited test since October 2024 and its help pages do not document it, so most accounts do not see it.
You should see: If it is there, that is the switch, one ad set at a time. If it is not, there is no switch to find and the next steps are the answer.

Step 2 of 4: Turn comments off on the post, if the ad is a boosted post.
Where: A boost promotes a Page post with the comment setting the post already has. On Facebook, open the post, turn commenting off or limit who can comment, then boost it or leave the boost running. An ad created in Ads Manager has no Page post to switch.
You should see: Nobody can comment on the boosted post, and nobody can ask a question under it either.

Step 3 of 4: Put your rules under the ads instead.
Where: On the page, the Moderation tab, Apply moderation to, Ads only or Both posts and ads. Links, scams, phone numbers, profanity and negativity are hidden or deleted the moment they arrive under every ad, and the questions stay.

You should see: Comments stay on, the junk is gone before a buyer reads it, and every removal is in the inbox with the rule that did it.

Step 4 of 4: Switch on Hide all comments when you want silence.
Where: The last rule on the Moderation tab. Every new comment under the ad arrives hidden and stays hidden until you unhide it. Nothing is public; everything waits in the inbox.

You should see: To your audience the ad reads as if comments were off. The questions are still there for you, hidden, with unhide one click away.

If something is off:
Problem: I do not see Comment controls in Ads Manager
Fix: Most accounts do not. Meta has kept it a limited test since October 2024. Use the rules, or Hide all comments.
Problem: Comments are off on my post but people still comment on the ad
Fix: Check that the ad is a boost of that post. An ad built in Ads Manager has no post setting to inherit; use the rules or Hide all comments.
Problem: Turning comments off would cost me the questions
Fix: It would. Under one set of Facebook ads from 1 to 17 September 2026, 576 comments arrived: 489 were spam a rule removed, 114 were people asking whether the product does what the ad says. Hide all comments keeps those in the inbox.

Common questions:
Question: Can you turn off comments on Facebook ads?
Answer: For most advertisers, no. Meta's help page says anyone who can see your ad can comment on it, and the comment control Meta announced in October 2024 is a test available to a limited number of businesses, found in the ad set under Placements, Inventory filter, Comment controls, with Public or No one. Everyone can moderate: the Page's profanity filter and blocked words reach your ads, Ads Manager hides one comment at a time, and CommentWatchDog hides or deletes by rule under every ad.
Question: Can you turn off comments on a boosted post?
Answer: Yes. Turn commenting off on the Page post on Facebook first; the boost carries the setting the post has. An ad created in Ads Manager has no post to switch.
Question: Can you turn off comments on Instagram ads?
Answer: The same answer. The comment control is the same limited test. On your own Instagram posts you can turn comments off per post, Hidden Words set on the account reach your ads, and CommentWatchDog's rules run under Instagram ads through the Page the account is linked to.
Question: Does CommentWatchDog turn comments off on an ad?
