Guide: Set a field
This page: https://commentwatchdog.com/help/flow-steps/set-a-field
Topic: Flow steps
Time: about 3 minutes
Who can do it: Owner, Administrator or Manager
Author: https://anantgupta.xyz (Anant Gupta, founder of CommentWatchDog)
Start in the app: https://app.commentwatchdog.com/en/inbox
Result when done: A value saved on the person, cleared, or added to a number.
Context: Set field saves a value on the person, clears one, or adds to a number such as a lead score. Values can use variables from earlier steps, so an answer or an HTTP result can be written into a field. Fields show on the person in People, and conditions and later flows can read them.

Before you start:
1. Up to 10 changes in one step, run in order; each field once per step.
2. The contact's own Name, Email and Phone can be set or cleared, never added to.
3. It works anywhere in a flow, on both platforms.

Steps:
Step 1 of 3: Add Set field to your flow.
Where: Open the flow (Automation, then the flow's row). In the Steps panel on the left, under Do (scroll the panel down), drag Set field onto the canvas, or select the step it should follow and click Set field. On a phone: Add step at the top left of the canvas, then Set field under Do.

You should see: The Set field card is on the canvas and its settings panel is open (a sheet on a phone).

Step 2 of 3: Add a change and pick the field.
Where: Panel, Changes: Add a change, then Choose a field… (On the contact, or Your fields). New field… makes one here: name it, and the field is made when you save the flow.

You should see: The change shows its field.

Step 3 of 3: Say what to do with it.
Where: For each change: Save a value (a value or a variable), Add to it (a number; a negative takes away, from 0 when empty), or Clear it.

You should see: The card reads each change, such as menu_visits +1.

If something is off:
Problem: A value was left out in a run
Fix: A value that does not fit the field's type (text in a number field) is left out and shown in the run.
Problem: "Add to it" needs a number
Fix: Type a number such as 10 or -5, or a variable that holds one.
Problem: Change each field once per step
Fix: Two changes to one field in a step are refused; use two steps.

Common questions:
Question: How many changes can one step make?
Answer: Up to 10, run in order, each field once.
Question: Can I keep a score per person?
Answer: Yes. Add to it adds a number to the field (0 when empty); a negative number takes away.
